Sports journalism has a เดิมพันกีฬา long tradition in Britain, with some of the most talented writers in journalism being drawn to it. This dates back to Victorian England when several modern sports – association football, cricket and rugby union – were first organized and codified. It was also in this period that the Boat Race, the annual rowing competition between the universities of Cambridge and Oxford, became an event with mass spectator appeal and journalistic coverage.

After the Second World War, the sports sections of British national newspapers expanded dramatically. It was at this time that many newspapers adopted the practice of using former sports stars, such as 1924 Olympic 100 meters champion Harold Abrahams or legendary England cricket captain Sir Leonard Hutton, to write columns for them. These were often ghost written by independent agencies based in Fleet Street or the provinces, which would then syndicate them to many different titles.

In the United States, the 1920s are regarded as the “Golden Age of American Sports”. This was when baseball and college football became hugely popular, which led to an enormous increase in newspaper and radio coverage. It was also in this period that the first sportswriters’ association was formed. Known as the Sports Journalists’ Association (SJA), it still exists today. It stages two awards events: the Sports Person of the Year award, which recognises outstanding achievement in sport, and the British Sports Journalism Award, the industry’s Oscars. Both of these are voted for by members of the SJA.
